Today, May 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston announced the appointment of a new bishop. We welcome Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala as the 10th Bishop of Wheeling – Charleston.
Bishop Evelio is a native of El Salvador who migrated to the United States in 1990. Bishop Brennan welcomed him, while director of vocations, into his priestly formation. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami, Fl. Bishop Evelio went on to receive a master’s degree in theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Bishop Menjivar was ordained into the priesthood on May 29, 2004 in the Archdiocese of Washington where he later became an auxiliary bishop on February 21, 2023 by Cardinal Wilton Gregory.
Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala will be installed in a mass on July 2nd at the Cathedral of St. Jospeh. Information will be forthcoming.
